AI, On-Demand Production and the Future of ArT Toys

Artificial intelligence can already generate convincing characters in seconds. As accessible 3D modelling and on-demand manufacturing continue developing, collectors may eventually create and produce personalised ArT Toys without a traditional studio, factory order or brand intermediary.

This raises a decisive question for the ArT Toy Movement:

Why should anybody buy an artist’s character when they can create their own?

From Visual Novelty to Cultural Meaning

Generative AI could expand the Movement by giving more creators, communities and territories access to character design and production.

It could also create an overwhelming supply of interchangeable Designer Toys: attractive faces, invented mythologies, polished packaging and endless variations produced almost instantly.

When novelty becomes unlimited, novelty stops being valuable by itself.

A limited edition may control how many objects exist. It cannot guarantee that those objects contain meaning.

Why Authorship Will Matter More

The relevant distinction is not simply handmade work versus AI-generated work.

A handmade object can repeat empty ideas. An artist using digital tools can still make precise and culturally meaningful decisions.

Authorship appears in what the creator selects, rejects and preserves. It emerges through experience, failures, material knowledge and the relationship between one work and a larger artistic position.

AI does not necessarily erase authorship. It makes the lack of authorship easier to detect.

The Collector’s New Responsibility

Collectors may soon encounter an almost infinite supply of immediately producible characters.

As a result, contemporary collecting will require stronger criteria:

Who made the decisions behind this object?

Does it contribute anything beyond its appearance?

What relationship does it preserve between artist, material, scene and community?

Would it still matter without algorithmic visibility?

This applies across vinyl figures, Sofubi, Kaiju, Fine Art Prints, painting and the wider visual culture surrounding ArT Toys.

The Future Role of Art Toy Culture

ArT Toy shops, galleries, publications and curators will not create value merely by offering more products.

Their importance will come from filtering abundance, providing Context and protecting the objects and ideas capable of becoming Memory.
